Anna Atshemyan

Born in 1965

Armenia/USA

Anna Atshemyan was born on July 25, 1965, into a family of musicians.

With exceptional musical abilities, her fate was already sealed, and she played the violin from the age of five and the piano from the age of seven.

At the age of seven, she entered the Tchaikovsky Specialized Music School, where she studied for 11 years in the class of her teacher, Professor Sergey Sarajyan.

In 1983, she entered the Yerevan State Conservatory named after Komitas. Continuing her musical education at the Conservatory, also in the class of Professor Sergey Sarajyan, she performed solo concerts as well as chamber music concerts. Her student life was accompanied by teaching activities. She was working and studying at the same time.

Anna Atshemyan also worked as a concertmeister in the Armenian Violin Ensemble, which was created by her father. It was a very interesting experience, and her intensive concert activity was of great importance for her musical development.

She pursued postgraduate studies in 2000 and, at the same time, began working at the Yerevan State Conservatory as an assistant to her professor, Sergey Sarajyan, with his students.

It can be said that these were the best years of her career. During that time, a new ensemble of student violinists was created at the Yerevan State Conservatory, and she conducted it. Her father, Gevorg Atshemyan, had created an ensemble of violinists, but due to the lack of repertoire for the violin ensemble, he had to create his repertoire. This repertoire was later published by Anna Atshemyan and her mother, Anahit Atshemyan—a violinist and professor at the Yerevan State Conservatory—who was also the artistic director of the same ensemble for a long time.

Since 1988, she has been working at the Tchaikovsky Specialized Music School as a piano teacher. Her students have participated in many national and international competitions and have become prize winners.

Anna Atshemyan has been collaborating with Italian musicians for more than 10 years, participating in competitions as a jury member. Her students also take part annually in the Calabrian competition called Magnia Graecia.

It is very gratifying that musical life has such activities, including competitions, concerts, and various musical events, as these are crucial for the development of the country’s musical culture.

Anna Atshemyan is the author of the book Gevorg Atshemyan’s Singing Violins (2011), which explores her father’s artistic legacy and his contributions to the repertoire of violin ensembles.
